Anyone else got a Vita? Get Trails of Cold Steel!
It's strange. I'd fallen out of love with Vita somewhat over the past year or so and got myself a New 3DS and played Pokemon and Super Smash Bros and stuff for a while. Then weirdly out of nowhere I picked up my Vita again (to play Akiba's Trip mainly) then I looked at the store I realized that Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel was on sale. So I picked that up, and I've been glued to my Vita all day today as a result. I'm not sure where the game will take me but so far I am absolutely thrilled with it! It's very cliche in its setting, another typical anime set in a school with the generic characters.... and it's also directly copying elements from Persona (4 in particular) and taking some heavy inspiration from Final Fantasy Type 0 as far as I can tell. But it all culminates in a way that feels bigger and better than either of those games. Seriously, when I first bought my Vita with the intent to play Persona 4 Golden- this is what I had hoped it would be like. Persona 4 ended up being a snooze-fest with painful linearity, painfully repetitive dungeons, obnoxious characters and frankly dull combat. That is not to say that LOH: Trails of Cold Steel isn't a little bit repetitive and doesn't have some cheesy characters, but for a start- the characters are varied and interesting, their conflict with each other feels convincing and understandable. The game has linear dungeons that are almost as repetitive as Persona's but they feel more rewarding and more pertinent to story development, plus outside of that the world seems to be large and varied and you have a lot more choice and freedom than you get with Persona. The stories of the two games essentially start similarly but the difference is in LOH: TOKS, the game gives you a peek at what is to come so that you feel that the game is really leading to something. Also I've seen screenshots online that indicate that there is so much more to LOH's world. And yeah the combat is better and more varied to. Sure there isn't the Persona monster thingies but ehhhh, I prefer this system anyway which gives you slight control over the trajectory of certain attacks and whatnot.
So I am not sure what this thread is about. I didn't really plan to write it. I just wanted other Vita owners to pick this game up, so I just went on here and had to spill my guts about how much I already love this game, only 6 hours in. NO RAGRETS.
