Apparently The Trick To Video Game Writing Is Making Straight White Gamers Angry

Good god. Tonight has been a deluge of hilarity. This time, my favourite Connor MacLeod impersonator discusses the secret to gaming journalism.

From Forbes

Writing at BuzzFeed, contributor Dan Golding has a list of nine things straight white guys won’t understand about gaming. That’s the title of the post, too. Nine things that, if you happen to be both straight and white, you simply won’t fathom. If you’re straight and black you’ll be just fine. If you’re gay and white, also fine. And if you’re not a guy, you probably know all this stuff already.

We should code a section of Powergamer that just twists and spoofs all these racist article titles just to highlight the absurdity of them:

"Nine things gay black women won't understand about gaming"

..highly doubt that article title would survive long at Buzzfeed.

Good on that writer at Forbes for exposing the hypocrisy and trivial bullshit.

But honestly I tire of it.

We're blessed over here at Powergamer to have a talented, tech-savvy female gamer like Ix, whom we wouldn't be here without. But surely it's an insult to every badass female chick like her to imply that Ix belongs to that 47% statistic. That statistic that includes old people that have never touched a console before and fake gamer girls that don't know how to knife in call of duty let alone know how to single-handedly code an amazing gaming website.

Real female gamers are a small percentage of gamers. When the "straight white male gamer" says that it is not out of some hatred or insecurity. It's just a widely known fact that you see from years of gaming. I can also not only demonstrate but back up that fact with a number of very reliable and individual sources that each correlate. The statistics I have show that it's 95% men and 5% women (give or take). But that isn't just any men or any women, it's the ones that read about games, watch videos on the games, buy the games, discuss the games, etc. We are talking about passionate gamers here. But nevermind, these journalists want to undermine the experience and knowledge of really passionate and skilled female gamers by lumping in a lot of casuals? Whatever, they're the ones doing the biggest disservice to female gamers in this industry.

47% statistic

How can that number even be close to true? My own experience is anecdotal, but I simply just can't have been so unlucky as to never come across any other female when listening in on team chats or just playing any online game. It has literally never happened to me. The only thing that has come close is when someone says they're female and then when they find out I'm actually one they admit they're actually male.

The only way I can see that number working is if you count every person who has ever installed Angry Birds on their phone and played it for at least two seconds, and then add everyone who has ever played Farmville on Facebook...but surely that's not GAMING in the sense we're talking.

Talk about breaking someones heart.

For me, everyone would just assume that I was a woman because of my avatar and apparently because of how I would write. Nobody gave me free stuff though ={.

I once played with a voice changer on a twitch channel, that I used to moderate, that made my voice sound high pitched. It sounded fake, to me, but some people believed it. One guy who was a former moderator of the channel, tried to hit on me in skype. Very persistent and didn't seam to listen when I told him I was a man. He finally listened and immediately logged off. Never spoke to me again.

That's EXACTLY what is counted in that numbers. I don't know why people would willingly conflate "person who plays 5 minutes of Angry Birds while waiting for the bus" with "Person who spends 1/3 of the day in AAA game", but it happens all the time and it leads to weird self-contradicting arguments.

Might search out and link some more professional explanations of these statistics, if I don't forget it, and once I stop feeling like I'm dying.

Edit: Take this source straight from a link in the article in the OP for now.
