Chris Parsons, developer of Sol Trader: AMA!

Hi everyone!

I'm Chris Parsons and I've been developing Sol Trader these past 4.5 years.

The game combines 2D Elite style gameplay with a random generated society you can really get to know. The game revolves around getting to know these characters and doing missions for them.

The game will be out on Stream/Humble store on 6th June.

I've done all the design and coding on the project, with some art and audio support from a small part time team.

I'm just about to head to EGX Rezzed in London to set up Our booth - if you are there it will be great to see you!

So hit me with any questions you have!

This is an AMA thread

From time to time we will invite people to do AMAs. Keep in mind that not all questions will be answered, and that our community guidelines still apply.

How long have you been developing video games and what was the single most difficult feature to implement into Sol Trader?

I started my career in Elixir Studios in 2001, so I guess 15 years :) I did take a 7 year break to run a web development company though :)

Most difficult feature: great question. Tracking all the different characters opinions of each other, and making it fast to retrieve that information was a real challenge. Also getting the lighting looking right was hard :)

What software or programming language did you use to create the game? Also what are the best games you have ever played, and why?

The game is written almost entirely in C, with a tiny number of C++ features. There's no engine. I've been heavily influenced by Handmade Hero in the design.

The best games: Crusader Kings II is up there, and forms one of the primary influences for Sol Trader. I love the complexity and the focus on family relationships. Also, Dwarf Fortress because it's still unlike anything else that's out there. Again, the sheer complexity is great fun, and the ability to create pretty much any type of Fortress you want. The history that's generated is super fun to explore - that's why Sol Trader has a history that you explore as part of the core gameplay.

Are you planning on bringing Sol Trader to other platforms if successful on PC?

The game will be simultaneously available on Windows, Mac and Linux on launch.
