Community Welcome to Powergamer!

Welcome to Powergamer!

As you may have noticed, we levelled up! The first version of Powergamer was a simple Wordpress platform focused on news and original content articles. We had an editorial team and grand ideas, but we quickly realised that there are so many other platforms that do this (and do it well), so we altered our concept slightly to focus more on community and game reviews.

This new platform is 100% custom built from scratch, so it allows us much greater flexibility in terms of what we want to achieve in the long term. It also allows us to adapt to our community and improve the platform as we all grow into it together.

We have brand new community guidelines that are worth reading through before posting anything, and if you find any bugs or quirks please tell us in the bug reporting thread. Finally, if you have any questions, suggestions, complaints or feedback don't hesitate to start a thread about it (or just PM one of the admins).

See below for a mission statement and a small FAQ.

Mission Statement

Freedom of speech & censorship
There are worrying signs on social media. Voices are silenced because the owners of the platforms (and admins and/or moderators) apply their personal values as reasons for blatant censorship. Reddit and Twitter are two very good examples. We want Powergamer to be a haven for people who value freedom of expression and thought, and the only way to do that is to be in full control of our own community.

Flawed review systems
The problem with traditional user rating systems is that it often results in extremes. Most people choose 0 or 10, and few pick anything in between. This results in user ratings being distorted when compared to critic reviews. Traditional user review systems are also pretty bad at distinguishing between games of certain categories or budgets. We want to change that and find a better way to rate games using community reviews.

Outdated ways of monetising
We hate advertisement and any form of passive one-way promotion. Because of this you will never see ads on Powergamer, and the only way for anyone to self-promote something on our platform is to do an AMA. That way the community can ask questions and get involved. To request an AMA, PM one of the admins or email [email protected]

Community reviews? Are you taking on OpenCritic and/or BasedGamer?
We believe OpenCritic is doing a great job in covering review aggregation from the media, so we see no reason in competing for that space. In fact we're looking forward to using their API when it's available. But we do want to build a database of our own reviews over time, and focus on what BasedGamer attempted (and miserably failed at): community-curated reviews. The most popular review for a game becomes that game's "official" Powergamer review, so the community decides how games are represented. And the best part: we won't ask for $50,000 to build it.
